Description
Space: An Alien Environment. Sending humans into space was and is now a daring adventure, with considerable risks. We had to overcome many unknowns – physical, technological, environmental, and medical – and we had to accept the unavoidable human sacrifice that goes with extreme exploration in alien environments. There is still much that we do not know or understand. Staying alive away from Earth’s gravity, atmosphere, light cycles and other people requires life support, protection from radiation, understanding gravity’s and light’s relationship with the human body and living in isolation. This introductory level seminar will provide the basic knowledge of how human life and health are affected by traveling or living in space, away from Earth and without gravity, and some of the issues a human faces in exploring the unknown.
Topics Covered
- Physical aspects of space to be overcome
- A short history of humans in space
- Supporting life in space – air, water, temperature and pressure, radiation shielding
- Eating, sleeping, personal hygiene, light, biological rhythms and sleep
- Living without gravity – effects on health, muscle, bone, and brain
- Health effects upon returning to Earth
- Health Preparation for travel and living in space – Using yoga therapy and other integrative therapeutics
- Can we go to Mars? Can we stay for any length of time there?
